Frequently Asked Questions
Essential Rewards points are one of the ways that we love to give back to Young Living members! When you sign up for Essential Rewards, not only do you get your monthly order shipped to you automatically, but you also get to enjoy points that can be used toward your favorite products, discounted shipping, and loyalty gifts for consecutive orders. To help you get started, here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Essential Rewards:

General

Q: How do I sign up for the Essential Rewards loyalty program?
A: You may sign up in one of two easy ways:
1. Online through your Virtual Office
2. By phone at 1.800.371.3515

Q: May I change the items in my Essential Rewards order and still receive all of the benefits of the program?
A:
Yes. You may change the items any time until 12 a.m. (midnight), MT, on your processing date (which is determined by you when you enroll in the program).

Q: May I make changes to my Essential Rewards order online?
A: Yes. You may make changes to your Essential Rewards order online at any time.

Q: If I wish to cancel my enrollment in the Essential Rewards program, can I do so online?
A: No. All Essential Rewards enrollment cancellations must be over the phone with one of our helpful Member Services agents.

Q: Do I need to place an order every month?
A: Yes. The Essential Rewards program offers rewards for shipments that process each month. Discounted shipping, earning loyalty gifts and reward points, and maintaining higher reward points percentages are contingent upon placing consecutive orders.

Q: Is a grace month still offered?
A: As of November 1, 2016, the option to select a grace month is no longer available. Members will not be able to select this option online or call and request it through Member Services. If a member misses two or more orders within a year, he or she will have to start over with loyalty gift qualification and will begin accumulating points again at the 10 percent level. Any previously earned loyalty gifts will not be available upon requalification.

Earning Gifts

Q: How do I earn gifts through the Essential Rewards program?
A: When you automatically place consecutive Essential Rewards orders, you can earn exclusive gifts. You’ll qualify for these gifts when you place consecutive Essential Rewards orders for 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. After 12 months, you’ll receive gifts after every additional 12 months of consecutive orders.

Q: How will I receive my gift?
A:
The gift will be added automatically to the next processed Essential Rewards order. For example, if a member reaches his or her third month in November, the gift for the third month would be added to the Essential Rewards order in December.

Q: If I earn a gift and then don’t process an order, can I re-earn that gift?
A:
No. You may only earn each gift one time. For example, you might earn the three-month gift and later cancel your Essential Rewards orders. If you start Essential Rewards again, the next gift you’ll be eligible for will be the six-month gift, not a second three-month gift. If you cancel your Essential Rewards order the month after you’ve earned a gift, the gift will come with your next processed Essential Rewards order, should you choose to reactivate in the program.

Q: If I already have an active Essential Rewards order processing monthly, how do I receive my gift?
A:
We began tracking members’ consecutive Essential Rewards orders starting in September 2016, including the orders of those who maintained active Essential Rewards orders prior to this time. This means that September was the first month for everyone to begin qualifying for Essential Rewards gifts for consecutive orders. Once a member achieves the threshold to receive a gift, it will be delivered with the next processed Essential Rewards order.

Earning Points

Q: How many points do I earn for my Essential Rewards order?
A: You will receive points based on a percentage of your PV for each Essential Rewards order. The percentage you receive depends on how many months you have consecutively placed Essential Rewards orders. There is no limit to the amount of points you can earn in a month.

1–3 months: 10 percent of each Essential Rewards order PV

4–24 months: 20 percent of each Essential Rewards order PV

25+ months: 25 percent of each Essential Rewards order PV

Q: How do I know at which percentage I’m earning points after the change in September 2016?
A:
All members who have previously processed consecutive Essential Rewards orders will earn points in the new system based on how many consecutive Essential Rewards orders they placed prior to September 1, 2016. For example, a member who has processed 18 consecutive Essential Rewards orders will be at the 20 percent level. An individual who has processed 28 consecutive Essential Rewards orders will begin at the 25 percent level.

Q: Is there a minimum PV for my order?
A: Yes. Your monthly Essential Rewards order in the U.S. must be at least 50 PV to qualify.

Redeeming Points

Q: How do I redeem my reward points?
A: You may redeem your points online at checkout by selecting “Apply Points” or by contacting Member Services at 1.800.371.3515. More information on point redemption can be found by logging in to Virtual Office and viewing the ER Tutorials.

Q: How many points may I redeem each month?
A: You may redeem up to 350 points each month.

Q: If I cancel my enrollment in Essential Rewards, do I lose my points?
A: If you choose to cancel your enrollment in the Essential Rewards program, you forfeit all of your unused Essential Rewards points. You must contact Member Services to cancel enrollment. Your monthly participation in the program, if resumed, will accumulate points again at the 10 percent level.

Q: Do I retain points earned for returned products?
A: No. You will forfeit any points earned on products that you later return.

Q: How soon may I redeem points that I earn?
A: You earn points the minute your order is shipped. You may redeem points any time after you have participated in the program for two months.

Q: When redeeming my points, do I go by the dollar amount or the PV amount in the price list?
A: When redeeming Essential Rewards points, use the PV amount rather than the dollar value. For example, if you have 50 points, you may redeem them for any product with a PV value up to 50. Points may only be redeemed for products with full PV values. Not all products are eligible, and items purchased with Essential Rewards points are not returnable.

Q: May I use my points for promotional products, such as discounted items?
A: You may buy any regularly available products at regular price as part of your Essential Rewards order, but you will not receive the discounted pricing if the item is part of your Essential Rewards points order. Some promotional items may not be available for purchase at all using Essential Rewards points. Essential Rewards kits are not eligible, and some products are restricted for a time after they are released, such as products launched during our annual International Grand Convention. Contact Member Services at 1.800.371.3515 if you have questions about specific items.

Q: Do my points expire?
A: Yes. Unused points expire on a 12-month rolling basis, meaning they expire 12 months from when they were earned.

Shipping

Q: May I use my Essential Rewards points to pay for my shipping costs?
A: No. Points may be redeemed only for products with full PV values.

Q: How do I get the discounted shipping rates?
A: Discounted shipping rates are offered for the YL Choice shipping methods. Discounts will be applied in the form of a credit issued to the order total at the time of checkout. Shipping prices are outlined in the shipping policies located in Virtual Office.

Q: May I select other shipping methods?
A: Yes. However, the discounted shipping rate is available only on orders shipped using YL Choice shipping methods.

Are Young Living essential oils certified organic?

Young Living prides itself on offering the purest and most effective essential oils possible, and they are often asked if their oils are certified organic. The organic certification, while important, is far from the only standard of quality by which to judge essential oils. Young Living practices a unique Seed to Seal® quality process that goes beyond the current organic standard in many ways. At Young Living, they don’t just rely on others to verify the purity of their oils. Young Living works directly with their farms, growers, and distillers to ensure the quality, integrity, and authenticity of every product produced. Their passion and commitment is to produce 100-percent pure, unadulterated essential oils that retain all of the natural constituents and therapeutic properties nature intended. Young Living’s Seed to Seal process ensures the purest therapeutic-grade essential oils through careful monitoring of every step of essential oil production—from the time a seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in the bottle. Every batch of essential oils, whether cultivated on their own farms or by one of their carefully vetted partner growers, is rigorously tested and subjected to careful review through every step of production and meets or exceeds industry safety and purity standards. Young Living’s dedication to quality ensures that they provide pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils with the complete, optimal blend of plant constituents to provide maximum potency and results. Does Young Living use pesticides?

Young Living does not use pesticides at their farms or their partner farms. Both Young Living’s farm practices and finished products are held to strict standards, and with the measures they have in place, Young Living feels confident that they offer their members the best, purest products available.

What tests does Young Living conduct on their essential oils?

Young Living uses its own internal labs and third-party facilities to verify that Young Living purity and potency standards are met. Each batch of essential oil is sent through six rigorous tests and must meet established quality benchmarks to pass through successfully.

  • Mass Spectrometer—Identifies the names of each constituent (plant chemicals) in the oil.
  • Gas Chromatograph—Measures the percentage of constituents in the oil.
  • Refractive Index—Measures the density of the oil using a concentrated beam of light.
  • Specific Gravity—Measures how heavy the oil is as compared to water.
  • Flash Point—Ignites the oil and tests it against standard flash temperatures.
  • Optical Rotation—Measures the molecular structure of the oil.

Once the tests are complete, the results are compared to the vast library of information Young Living has amassed over 20 years. This library of oil data is unmatched in the industry. If the incoming oils do not meet the established profile, they are rejected and not allowed to be bottled as a Young Living product.

What is the shelf life of Young Living oils?

Young Living’s essential oils do not expire and will maintain their integrity, efficacy, and beneficial properties virtually indefinitely, provided they are stored properly in a dark-glass bottle, upright and tightly sealed, out of sunlight, and in cool temperatures.

Can I store essential oils in plastic containers?

Young Living recommends that members store essential oils in their original containers. However, if you would like to store your oils in different containers, they recommend using dark-colored glass. Young Living does not recommend storing undiluted essential oils in plastic containers because many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material.

Are essential oils safe for use on or around animals?

Many people successfully use Young Living products with their animals. They offer Animal Scents™ products that are designed for use with animals, including an Animal Scents oil collection.

Are Young Living essential oils distilled multiple times?

Each batch of Young Living essential oil is only processed/distilled from plants once before bottling.

How are Young Living essential oils created?

Essential oils are aromatic liquids distilled or extracted from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruit, and seeds. Most Young Living essential oils are extracted using steam distillation. Their food-grade stainless steel distillers are based on a state-of-the-art design that uses very low pressure and low temperature, which is critical for preserving all of the fragile therapeutic constituents of essential oils. Plants are steam distilled in small batches for extended periods using a special low-pressure, low-heat vertical steam technology. Young Living’s citrus oils are cold pressed from the rinds of their designated fruit, such as bergamot, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon. No solvents or synthetic chemicals of any kind are used or added in either method.

Is it possible to be allergic to essential oils?

Essential oils do not generally contain the proteins responsible for allergic reactions, which minimizes the likelihood of an allergic reaction. However, individual sensitivities do vary, and people can still experience sensitivities to essential oils. When using a new essential oil, dilution and a skin spot test is a good idea to ensure that you do not experience any sensitivity to that particular oil.

How many drops are in a 5-ml and 15-ml bottle of essential oil?

There are approximately 85 drops (1 teaspoon) in a 5-ml bottle and approximately 250 drops (1 tablespoon) in a 15-ml bottle.

Are essential oils still effective and safe to use if they have been left in the heat?

UV exposure will cause the greatest damage to the constituents of essential oils, and heat and light combined will affect them even more quickly. If a package is delivered and sitting on the porch for several hours (or even a few days), but the oils are not directly exposed to UV light, the efficacy of the oils will not be compromised. If the oil is hot, cool it before using. Prolonged exposure to light will cause the oil constituents to change or diminish.

Can essential oils be used neat (without dilution) on the skin?

Some essential oils can be used neat on the skin. All label instructions should be followed. Young Living’s labels indicate when an essential oil should be diluted. If it is an essential oil that you have never used, dilution and a skin spot test is a good idea to ensure that you do not experience any sensitivity to that particular essential oil.

Do essential oils contain the vitamins present in the plant?

Due to the distillation process, there are no appreciable amounts of vitamins in essential oils.

Does Young Living provide testing reports for its essential oils?

Every batch of Young Living essential oil goes through stringent GC/MS testing to ensure their strict standards are met. These reports are proprietary and regarded as trade secrets.

Does Young Living practice sustainable growing methods?

Yes, Young Living is committed to being responsible stewards of the environment and take great care to preserve and protect their planet’s natural resources. These core values are evident in their Seed to Seal® philosophy, which promotes sustainable farming and sourcing practices, while enabling them to produce the purest, most potent essential oils in the world.

What does Young Living do with the leftover material from oil distillation?

The remaining material from oil distillation is used in compost.

What is Young Living’s policy regarding Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)?

Young Living takes pride in utilizing the highest quality botanicals for its essential oils and oil-infused products. Every effort is made to ensure that the ingredients in their products are the purest and most potent available. Young Living goes to great lengths to formulate and use non-GMO (genetically modified organism) sources for its products whenever they are both verifiable and available. Although in the majority of cases they are able to certify that Young Living product ingredients are non-GMO, there are instances when sourcing and manufacturing constraints require the use of botanicals and materials that are uncertified or untraceable back to a verifiable non-GMO source. In addition, there are no clear guidelines on unified labeling standards from U.S. government agencies regarding non-GMO labeling. Young Living reaffirms their commitment to offering safe, effective, and high-quality products to their customers and members around the world. They are continuously researching ways to provide the highest quality and most natural products for their members.

Are Young Living products tested on animals?

Young Living has a policy against testing the efficacy or safety of its products on animals. Young Living’s products are formulated to be safe for nearly all users, and animal testing is neither required nor performed in their product development process.

How does Young Living ensure that its products do not contain heavy metals?

All raw ingredients used in Young Living products are tested for contaminants, including heavy metals, and must meet strict specifications.

Shipping Rates:

Beginning June 15, we will be implementing a new set of shipping options for our U.S. members that will give them more choices for receiving their Young Living orders, while providing additional shipping perks to Essential Rewards members and to new members who order a Starter Kit. While many of these options are less expensive for our members, we estimate that they will also represent significant savings for Young Living.

Because the overwhelming majority of the orders we send out weigh just 1–2 pounds, we will be offering a new, less-expensive shipping option for packages of this size. At only $6.99 for standard orders and $5.99 for Essential Rewards orders, this new offering is 1–2 dollars less than our current ground shipping. We are able achieve this lower-cost option through a variety of third-party shipping carriers, including FedEx, USPS, DHL, and UPS. Please note that these packages will take 3–8 days to arrive, rather than the 3–5 days required for our previous shipping. Young Living will select the best shipping carrier for each standard mail package at the time of shipment, and members will not pick the carrier when selecting this shipping option. This standard mail option will be the default option for all packages under 9 pounds.
For members who would like to guarantee the shipping carrier at time of checkout, they may still choose our same FedEx shipping options at slightly adjusted costs, some of which are lower, some slightly higher.
Other new shipping options where Young Living will select the best shipping carrier at the time of shipment include:
• Mail (3–8 days)
• Ground (3–5 days)
• 3-Day (3 days)
• 2-Day (2 days)
• Overnight (1 day)

Return Policy:

Be sure to check the products thoroughly upon receiving the parcel, any order discrepancy or damage must be reported within 5 days of invoice. You may return or exchange items purchased within 90 days of receiving them.
General Return and Refund Policy (Applicable for Both Standard Order & Essential Rewards Order)
Any unopened product within 30 days after shipment will be applied to a full refund in the same payment method of the purchase price (less shipping charges).
Any opened product within 30 days after shipment will be applied to a credit* on your Young Living account of the purchase price (less shipping charges).
Any opened or unopened product up to 90 days after shipment will be applied to a credit* on your Young Living account of the purchase price (less shipping charges and a 10% handling fee). The credit applied to opened product will be based on the percentage of the product returned.
*For example, if you return 50% of a product, then a credit of 50% (less shipping charges) will be applied to your Young Living account.
